Synchronicity

Project type

Aviary Design

Date

January 2022

Location

Chicago

The project is conceived as an amalgamation of exhibitions that embrace the intersection of diverse systems, demographics, programs, and activities. Rather than imposing a singular narrative, the building translates the complex nature and layered demands of the site into a built form, triggering a chain of unexpected interactions, events, and spatial situations that evolve through use and experience.

The aviary design strategy is defined by the concept of syncopation, which is understood as the displacement of regular accents within an expected pattern, resulting in a deliberate disruption of user expectations. This idea is spatially expressed through the arrangement of spaces and elements, ensuring that every point within the aviary offers a unique and engaging experience for its users. While the mat building itself maintains a simple and restrained form, this simplicity allows the roof structure to emerge as the primary architectural focal point.

The design aspires to create a seamless transition between interior and exterior spaces, fostering an environment that feels continuous and fluid for both the birds and the visitors. In doing so, the project reinforces the belief that architecture serves as the frame of life—supporting and enriching the subtle yet fundamental expressions of human experience, as eloquently stated by Frank Lloyd Wright
